I listened to the approaching sound of my husband's footsteps up the stairs. Even though I hadn't done too well with time management during the day, I confess, I had gotten it together at the end, dinner was pretty much ready, and he had expressed that he was pleased. Phew, big bullet dodged!
Nevertheless, now Jay came into the kitchen tight-lipped. I looked at his expression with concern. "Honey?" I questioned.
He turned grave HOH-y eyes on me. "Kay, did you make the bed today?" It was the tone that told me he had already been downstairs, knew the answer, and wasn't happy.
My eyes went wide, and I stared at him in disbelief. "No, no, no, no! Jay, I thought I did! I thought for sure I did!"
He gazed back, his face might as well been made of granite. "Why don't you go look." He said it in the ominous no nonsense, "it's not done, and you better fix it, before you make your consequence even worse" tone I've come to know way better than I should, but hadn't heard much lately. Reminding me once again his cracking down since last night was for real. Ugh!
Slowly, I shuffled down the stairs, trying not to cry. I REALLY didn't want to be in trouble, and it was clear HOH Jay was back to stay. I had been punished the night before, for the first time since moving into our new house. I deserved it, I admit it. Jay had been taking it easy on me, hoping I'd show he wouldn't have to discipline. But I confess instead of seeing it as a gift, I'd seen it as a carpe diem opportunity to take advantage of what all I could get away with while I had the shot. Eek, hate to admit that! So yeah, I didn't handle it well apparently, and he reluctantly told me gracetime was over. But he also said one thing he was proud of me about is that I had still been consistently remembering to make the bed. And now I had screwed that up too! I shook my head, not believing I could forget something so simple. We've been together how long? Geez!
When I got to the room, I saw the bed actually was made, like I had thought. Huh. Then I saw it. A beautiful bouquet of roses, and a card was lying on the bedspread. As I picked up the roses, I actually did cry, but for a different reason now. My wonderful husband had put them there for me, to usher in our anniversary (he gets home shortly before midnight because of his work hours). And then I opened the card. Is this for real? I stared with happy shock at what was inside. "1 Free Get Out of a Spanking", to be cashed in for any one time I want, no strings attached! Holy Cow! This is like the best gift EVER! And yes, I know, I know, DD wives everywhere, I can hear your gasps of jealousy. I'm lucky...very, very, VERY lucky, hee hee! (even now, I pick it up, trying to contain my wicked glee as I think of the possibilities!).
My first inclination was to run into his arms and express my adoration and deepest thanks! But he'd also been rotten and conniving, making me think I was in trouble when I wasn't, and I have my pride to defend! So after kissing my prank-pulling husband, and letting him know how pleased I was with my flowers and amazing gift, I playfully called him out on being the brat he is. As so often in our relationship, those mesmerizing blue-green eyes of his were alight with mischief. "Yeah, but it was funny," he grinned. "REALLY funny!"
For him, maybe! Sheesh! I will say, one thing about my Jay, he does a good job of making life in our house never boring.
I'm reminded though, how lucky I am, not just to be one of the rare wives to actually get a REAL coveted "Get Out of A Spanking" card, but to be married to such an amazing man. Then too, maybe lucky is the wrong word. I have been blessed beyond what I ever imagined.
And today especially, I am once again awash with love (and admiration) for this guy who holds my heart, and is the center of my world. :)
Kay, that was the absolute best post I have read in a long time. Congratulations on your anniversery and I am glad you have such a great husband

ReplyDeleteOh Kay, my heart can't take this..... I had butteflies in my tummy.
ReplyDeleteI get so caught up in reading yours and Stormy's blogs that I can't seem to distinguish that it's you going to get a spanking .... And not me! My two favorite bloggers, and yet the ones that give me the highest percentage of having a severe anxiety attack! Lol. What's a girl to do! I couldn't believe you had dinner all made, everything was so good, however a little unmade bed was going to get you spanked!
It took me a minute to get over it (I can only imagine how YOU felt), but then I smiled. How nice of him to give you such a sweet gift, not the roses, but the get out of a spanking card. The best gift ever to a DDer! So glad God gifted you with a wonderful man ... and your Jay with such a wonderful woman.
Happy anniversary. Hope you are blessed with many happy years inside your new home.
